Screenwriting - Creating Characters

Creating characters is a fun, rewarding part of how to write a screenplay. You might have a character already in mind, you might not. Here's how to create memorable characters:

Characters in a screenplay are no different to people in real life. They have flaws. They have insecurities. They have a past that drives every action they make. If you have a major in Psychology this bit will tickle your fancy. The trick to creating three dimensional characters is to develop them fully. So you know everything about them.

Let's start with their name. Yes, even this requires thought. Try to pick a name which enhances their characteristics. If they are meant to fit in with the crowd, give them a really common name.

Spend time developing your characters, if you don't they will come across as two dimensional stereotypes. That's one way to kill interest in your screenplay. Most of what you develop wont be used in the final screenplay but its needed in the pre-writing stage because they build your character. They give them the motivation. It makes them who they are. The more you develop, the more you know about your characters. The more fulfilling you finished screenplay will be.

Two things that are incredibly helpful in screenwriting is to developing your characters are biography and back story.

Take some time to write a complete biography of your character. Write down everything you know about your character. Everything you want them to be.

Keep pushing yourself to make them unique. How do they walk? Tall, confident or hunched with their head down? How do they eat their cereal? How do they like to relax?

These may seem silly questions to ask but the answer to questions like these reveal so much about your characters. Instead of telling the audience what they are like show an image of them doing something, the way they would do it. A picture tells a thousand words.

Its helpful to run your character through an average day. Gandhi once said, "My life is my message". Whatever you do with your life if the message your projecting. Apply that to your characters.

Back story is essential to screenwriting. This is the reason why they are the way they are. You don't need to write everything that's happened in their life up until the screenplay starts. You only need to know relevant information which can be used throughout the story. For example do they have trust issues because six months ago their partner was unfaithful? That kind of thing is relevant. Write what happened as if you were there and your character will start to grow.

This is mainly for you main character (protagonist) but try to do the same for all your characters. From the bad guy (antagonist) to the love interest. From the minor character who appears in a few scenes to an extra who has a pivotal part. Okay I don't expect you to know as much for the minor characters but have a understanding of who they are and where they have come from. Make sure they don't slip into stereotypes.

Creating a character isn't a quick process. It can be if you want a two dimensional character or stereotype. Give it some time and it will pay dividends in the end. Give them a history. Make the audience relate to them. If the audience doesn't relate, they are not going to root for the protagonist. If they don't, they don't care for what happens. They don't care for your story.

ASP Hosting Simplified

ASP stands for Active Server Pages. It is a technology that enables users to design and creative interactive pages for their websites, using something called "server-side scripting". What do we mean by interactive? Forms, in-site search engines, blogs, user forums, newsletters, calendars, WhoIs searches, web-based email, polls, surveys, hit counters and more.

Best of all, with ASP, no longer do webmasters have to concern themselves with what browser a visitor to their site is using. With ASP hosting, your website will appear identically on all computers, on all browsers, a claim that HTML simply cannot make.

Anytime a browser requests a webpage that has the .asp extension where the more familiar .htm or .html would be, the hosting provider's web server interprets any ASP scripts in the program first and foremost, before delivering any HTML info to the browser. This is why you cannot simply run ASP websites with just any hosting company. The hosting company you choose must have servers that support ASP, or else the ASP scripts you use will be rendered useless.

When examining web hosting companies to find one that supports ASP, you must look specifically for ASP support. Do not simply assume that because a hosting company supports "most web-based scripts, from CGI to Perl" that it supports ASP. If it doesn't say so in an obvious place on the sales site, go to the hosting company's FAQ and look for ASP. And since most FAQs are searchable, this shouldn't be difficult to do. If you're really enamored with a particular hosting company (or their current promotion) but can find no information on ASP support, consider contacting them via email, telephone, or web chat to find out. It's possible that they do support ASP and just have a lousy sales site (which may be an indicator of an altogether different sort).

Microsoft brought ASP to the world, and as such provides the platform - Windows - on which ASP generally works best. In order to play around with ASP scripts on your web pages, you'll have to download and install onto your system an ASP server, like Microsoft's Internet Information Services (IIS) or Microsoft's Personal Web Server (PWS) -- one or both of which is included with most Windows packages for no extra charge. If you use Windows on your machine and have never encountered IIS or PWS, chances are it's because you have to "Add" the program to your hard drive using the Windows software CD-ROM or through your control panel, since it's often not included as part of the "Basic Install".

Incidentally, Windows ME and Windows XP Home Edition are lacking in support for ASP scripts. But we're willing to bet the forthcoming Windows Vista probably does.

For those webmasters on a PC that isn't Windows-based, all hope is not lost. Sun Microsystems has developed a program called Chili!Soft ASP that allows other servers -- such as Red Hat, Apache, and Secure Server -- and other operating systems -- such as Linux, Solaris, and AIX -- to support ASP hosting.

Writing and using ASP scripts is easy too -- at least it's no harder than HTML, with all commands occurring between ";" instead of "". Not so big a difference, is there? And you can find an abundance of software tools all over the web (many for free) that helps even the greenest novice create interactive web pages rife with ASP.

ASP is such a versatile language that more and more hosting companies are finding themselves compelled to add ASP support to their hosting packages just to remain competitive. This, of course, is only to your advantage as you can comparison shop around for the best ASP hosting offerings right alongside all the other features you're looking for.

The Purpose of Our Life

Life is by the power of God and not by some evolutionary accident. If you believe we exist by mere chance, or derived from chemical evolution, life has little meaning and there is no salvation or eternal life for anyone. The secret is out. Satan sought Thomas Huxley and Charles Darwin in the 1800's to set up the lie, which is called evolution. This confession, by a leader of a satanic church, is now on YouTube.

As we grow up, some of us seek God and what life is about, however many do not and the greatest gift that God has to offer us, which is eternal life, is ignored by many. God rewards those who diligently seek him, and indeed we have a choice to seek or ignore God. It is quite amazing how many people are not sure why they exist.

Versus in the bible stating that God loves his creation or grants eternal life does not prove that he does. However, fulfilled prophecies show that the bible is indeed the word of God and what the bible predicts indeed happens. For example, the Jews going back to Israel, once again, after centuries of wondering around the world was predicted in the old testament and it was fulfilled in 1948. This was a super prophecy pointing to the validity of the bible as the word of God. Thus, it makes sense to take the meaning of life from what the bible has stated and our creator as God. Ultimately, life is about finding the true God of the universe and establishing a relationship with our creator.

The theory of evolution goes against the fact that something cannot come from nothing, and inanimate things, such as gravity, cannot create planets and moons. They have no eyes or intellect or understanding.

It is also obvious that apes are not transitioning into humans, and we have absolutely no live species in transition.

The meaning of life has been debated for centuries by scientists, authors, pastors and everyone in between but common sense should tell anyone that they did not come into existence by chance, instead they were created. It is said in the theory of evolution, that a one-celled ameba slowly evolved into human beings. This is quite comical because, first of all, all humans come into the world as new-born babies. And a new-born baby needs a grown up to take care of it for years. With evolution the baby must come first, because it is not possible, according to the theory, for an adult to come first.

The truth is the process must start with two adults, who can fully take care of themselves.

Why is it So Important to Copyright Your Work?

Anyone working in a creative industry will be fully aware of the pernicious extent of the crime of copyright infringement. Anyone who has been victim to such activities as plagiarism will know that it is a crime that affects the victim in a way not dissimilar to being burgled. Creative workers often put a lot of their emotion into making their work as enjoyable for the reader, viewer or listener as they possibly can, and to see someone else get credit for something into which you have put blood, sweat and tears is as galling as you can possibly imagine. It is worth taking every step possible to protect your work in such cases.

In recent years there has been a boom in the Internet-based pursuit of making images using PhotoShop in order to create a satirical image or a parody of something in the public eye. The amount of work and creative intelligence that goes into such images is variable, but in many cases the feedback given to such images puts it very firmly in the camp marked "creative art." These images have proven to be so popular that communities have built up to showcase them, and this has attracted the attention of other areas of the media, including printed magazines and newspapers. It is not unheard of for these publications to take the images and compile them into a story. Although this could ordinarily be considered to be a positive for the creators - recognition is good for any artist - it is not quite so simple.

The standard practice where these works are concerned is to reproduce them without giving any credit to the person who created the image. This is all the more prevalent because the people creating the images often work under a screen name which gives them a level of anonymity. Proving the work to be theirs is often far from simple. One solution to this is to "watermark" your images. Often, however, the watermark needs to be placed on the fringes of the picture in order to keep the integrity of the image. In cases like this, newspapers have been known to "crop" the images, thus removing any identifying watermark.

In many ways, the crime of plagiarism is like every other premeditated crime - as soon as a new way of combating it is discovered, the criminal changes their tack and finds a way around the problem. This has led to a number of frustrated artists, seeing their work getting the recognition it deserves, but with the credit going to a corporation who had nothing whatsoever to do with the creative process. There are also issues surrounding media appropriation of popular trends, which can lead to a loss of overall quality control and damage being done to the art form. A lot of thought is required if plagiarists are to be thwarted in their efforts to pass off other people's work as their own. It is to be expected that this will include the artists becoming more aware of, and more prepared to exercise, legal solutions to the problem.

Fast Food and Health Care Taxes Considered

Did you know that 30% of all franchised outlets in 1977 were food franchises? That's interesting that one-third of all franchises in the United States are food related, and a good many of them are fast food. Why fast food you ask? It's simple, we live in a fast paced society with cars and roads, and people get hungry along the way and want to stop and get something to eat really quick, and then move on.

Not long ago, the state of New York wanted to pass a tax on all fast food, because of the health risks, and the increase of obesity factor that these QSRs (quick service restaurants) supposedly caused, which will inevitably drive up health care costs if everyone gets diabetes. The United States Congress liked this rule, and they are proposing regulations and taxation's on fast food restaurants as well.

This will severely hurt the franchising industry, and there are more than 250,000 fast food restaurants in the United States. Each one of them probably hires between 20 and 25 people on average. Are you beginning to see the economic impact that such a rule could have? Now some say that if the government is going to provide healthcare for everyone they must control the diets of all the humans within their civilization otherwise they can't afford the health care costs.

This is a real problem because on one hand the government is saying they're going to provide healthcare, and they are going to tax all of us to pay for it. But since taxing all of us won't pay for it all, they want to tax all the fast food restaurants. This will put people out of business, decrease the number of jobs, and fewer people will be able to pay the tax to provide healthcare.

Meanwhile, we are taking away the personal choice of what you eat, what you drink, and in the future I hope they will take away our right to what we think and what we say. That's why I have posted this article today; rather than waiting till tomorrow. Please consider all this.

What Makes a Great Giclee

One of the most common questions asked is how to produce the best possible giclee. A giclee is a high fidelity print made with inkjets using pigmented inks. Although it is a fairly simple and short inquiry, the answer is complex. I will try to split it in three parts:

File quality

Native resolution needs to be a minimum of 150 ppi for art papers and 200 for resin coated. When I say native, I mean before any kind of interpolation. Interpolation of files over 200% is harmful. Also, digitally created files (such as files from digital cameras and computer graphics raster programs) interpolate better. Vector files are resolution independent: an Illustrator file can be printed as large as you wish. It needs to be rasterized at the wanted resolution for the size of the final print.

Make sure your files are color balanced and no crossover is present. Crossover occurs when complementary colors are present and not wanted in an image. Also, it is very important there is no clipping in highlights and shadows. You can easily see any issues by running a histogram in Photoshop. Last but not least, is the image sharp?

Hardware and software

A giclee must be made with a high quality printer. Right now I would not consider anything else but a pro Epson, Roland, Colorspan or Iris. HP and Canon have a few interesting products in the pipeline.

Make sure you use professional editing software such as Photoshop. Also a RIP is a must in a production environment. If you are producing low volumes, the regular drivers supplied for free with all printers will do.

Inks and substrates

This is the most complex item. As for inks, it goes without saying that pigments should be used. Dyes are mostly organic compounds and as such they break down. Dyes have a wider color gamut but are unsuitable for long lasting prints.

The papers are another huge factor. Make sure you buy archival, acid free substrates. OBA free materials are preferred. OBA stands for optical brighteners and OBA papers tend to yellow and possibly break down over time. It is imperative you coat OBA papers with UV protecting compounds.

Coating is another issue. At this time liquid or spray coatings are the standard. Do not use laminate sheets as they crack and shift to yellow in months or at best a few years.

Rapid Recovery After Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation is both a popular and highly successful procedure that is done over 300,000 times per year in the United States alone. Some women, however, fear the procedure due to the belief that there is a lot of pain after surgery and that their return to work or normal activities may take several weeks. Breast augmentation surgery today, however, can put the patient back to a near normal schedule within days.

Breast augmentation, from a simplistic standpoint, is really a big 'pulled muscle'. In this case, the pectoralis muscle on the chest is 'pulled'. Breast augmentation, in most cases, is the lifting up of this muscle and placing an implant partially underneath it. No breast implant is completely under the muscle or it would be positioned too high and the nipple would be pointing downward. As the pocket into which a breast implant is placed controls the final shape of the breast, recovery after breast augmentation is really muscular. From a physical therapy standpoint, how do you recover from a pulled muscle? Do you not move it...or bind it up and keep it from moving? The answer is.....use it! Early moving and stretching of an injured muscle is the key to a faster recovery after breast augmentation. You can't hurt the breast implant by using your arm and chest muscles and early movement will not be responsible for an implant 'getting out of position'.

In Indianapolis, the approach to a no recovery breast augmentation program begins in the operating room. A dose of steroids is given at the start of surgery and a bioelectric device, known as Actipatch, is placed over each breast before the patient leaves the operating room. This device, which is worn for 48 hours after surgery, helps control pain and swelling. I then start my breast augmentation patients on range of motion arm exercises beginning the night of surgery as well as 800mg of Ibuprofen twice a day also. The goal is to get patients off narcotics in 24 hours, if possible, and be able to get out of the house for dinner or shopping the next day. While not every patient achieves this exact timeline for a 'rapid recovery', this aggressive approach helps make a breast augmentation easier to go through than ever before.

The Duty and Meanings of the Master in Chinese Culture

When we refer to Chinese education, Confucius can be a key figure in Chinese education history. His status as a teacher and his education concepts have deeply rooted in Chinese people's mind, while his fame and his ideas of teaching even spread overseas.

Even today, some leaders in Southeast Asian countries continue to advocate Confucius as a rivalry with modern Western civilization. From "Kung Fu Panda", people will find it is deeply branded by Confucius educational concepts. In Confucius's concept of education, he promoted moral education.

At spring and autumn period, with great changes in production relations, the superstructure became a reality and feudal statutes were promulgated in various states to restrict the privilege of slave-owning aristocrats. In view of this situation, Confucius proposed his theory of rule of virtue, advocating enlightenment by means of moral education offered to the ducks and common people, in an attempt to safeguard the Zhou rites-criteria and institutions to normalize and restrict their behavior in the interests of slavery, the patriarchic clan system.

Under the clan slavery in Zhou, the patriarchic system was nothing less than a hierarchical system, ethics was the same as politics, clan power was equal to political power, and monarchical power and patriarchic power were consistent.

Therefore, people who showed filial piety to parents and elder brothers at home would be loyal to monarchs, and vice versa. Confucius advocated filial piety as the foundation of "people" in an attempt to strengthen the patriarchic system-to safeguard the patriarchic system-to safeguard the Zhou hierarchy.

Later, moral teaching becomes one important part of Chinese education which is passed down from generations to generations. In his theory, "benevolence" can be the highest concept of morals. His moral education system based on "filial duty", be regulated by "etiquette", constantly pursued by "faithfulness and forgiveness", and guided by "the Doctrine of the Mean".

In addition, they promote morals, such as, wisdom.
